I use rice paper and trace the character with food coloring markers... this ensures that the character is accurate. Howereve, i usually freehand at least part of the background. Unfortunately, I do not have the drawing skills to freehand the character :-(

well you have the piping skills that's for sure :) what do you do to invert the image so that it's showing the same way as the picture?

I just trace directly over the picture using the rice paper... it's thin enough to see through, however a tracing light/ desk would be ideal

but when you invert that onto the cake, wouldn't the picture be reversed?

no, you trace onto the rice paper, then set it on the cake with the crumbcoat, then frost over the rice paper. it desolves into the frosting in about 24-48 hrs
